Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus
155CE-220CE
- Tertullian is often mentioned as a source by Christians, but he wasn't contemporary since he was born 120 years after the supposed death of Jesus.
- It's believed that he converted to Christianity around 197CE and is considered an early church father.
- He wrote apologetics for Christianity and against Judaism and paganism.
- He was also the first writer in Latin to use the term Trinity.
- He is considered the father of Latin Christianity.
- He wrote 5 books specifically Against Marcion.
- Against Marcion contains a reference to a general date range that Marcion composed his gospel between Tiberius and Antoninus Pius who reigned 138CE-161CE. Estimates place it around 130s-140s CE.
- Against Marcion book 4 Chapter 4 points out that Marcion argues that Luke was interpolated by defenders of Judaism.
- In Against Marcion book 5 Chapter 1 Tertullian puts into question Paul's origins according to Marcion. Tertullian points out Paul isn't in the gospel or any list of apostles. Instead, Tertullian believes Paul's story begins in the Old Testament from the line of Benjamin.
- Tertullian believes Acts is evidence of the origins of Paul that Marction doesn't have/believe, making Paul "his" (Tertullian).
- Tertullian was born in 155CE and Marction died around 160CE when Tertullian was around five years old. Tertullian wrote Against Marcion around 207CE, almost 50 years after the passing of Marcion. He's composing objections directly to Marcion but would know that he will not get a reply or counterargument.
- Tertullian also wrote that the Chrestians are Christians.
